Gamma-Ray Burst Luminosity Functions Based on Luminosity Criteria

چکیده

We review five studies of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) luminosity function that are based on one or more of the proposed luminosity criteria, i.e., variability, spectral lag and spectral hardness. A comparison between the resulting luminosity functions at redshift zero shows considerable divergence. We derive for each of the luminosity functions the expected source counts and the Euclidean value of < V/Vmax >. The source counts exhibit large differences from the observed counts. In most cases the value of < V/Vmax > differs substantially from the observed value of 0.34 for BATSE-based samples, with offsets ranging from 6− 24 sigmas. Given that the value of < V/Vmax > is well established and that it is a cosmological distance criterion, we recommend that any study of the GRB luminosity function take its value into account.

Constraints on the Gamma-ray Burst Luminosity Function from PVO and BATSE Observations

We examine the width of the gamma-ray burst luminosity function through the distribution of GRB peak fluxes as detected by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) and the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE). The strength of the analysis is greatly enhanced by using a merged catalog of peak fluxes from both instruments with good cross-calibration of their sensitivities. The range of peak fluxe...

Luminosity Functions of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

Aims. Use the standard fireball model to create virtual populations of gamma-ray burst afterglows and study their luminosity functions. Methods. We randomly vary the parameters of the standard fireball model to create virtual populations of afterglows. We use the luminosity of each burst at an observer’s time of 1 day to create a luminosity function and compare our results with available observ...

Gamma-Ray Burst Luminosity Functions Based On a Newly Discovered Correlation Between Peak Spectral Energy and V/Vmax

We have discovered a correlation between the observed peak spectral energy Epk,obs and the Euclidean value of < V/Vmax > of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We present the evidence for the correlation in the GUSBAD catalog and use it to derive the luminosity function of GRBs without using any redshifts. The procedure involves dividing GUSBAD GRBs into five spectral classes based on their Epk,obs. The o...

Explaining the Gamma Ray Burst Lag/luminosity and Variability/luminosity Relations

Two different luminosity indicators have been recently proposed for Gamma Ray Bursts that use the lag between light curve peaks with hard and soft photons as well as the variability (’spikiness’) of the burst light curve. Schaefer, Deng, & Band have proven that both of these luminosity indicators are valid by finding a lag/variability relation for 112 BATSE bursts. Here, I provide simple and ge...

On the Kinematic Origin of the Luminosity-Pulse Lag Relationship in Gamma-ray Bursts

This paper presents an interpretation based on gamma-ray burst source kinematics for the relationship found by Norris et al. between peak luminosity and energy-dependent pulse lag. I argue that the correlation should instead be between number luminosity and pulse lag. This interpretation improves the least-squares fit of this correlation for the known bursts by 25 percent or more. It also sugge...
